CLIFFS OF MOHER & BURREN TOUR

Tour Overview

This Tour takes you on a journey through the unique geology and lunar landscape of the Burren, one of Europe’s great limestone karst regions. Following lunch at the little village of Doolin (the home of traditional Irish Music) we visit the magnificent Cliffs of Moher which recently appeared in the Harry Potter movie Half Blood Prince.

Nominated as one of the natural wonders of the world this amazing site contains 5 miles of towering cliffs with a vertical drop of over 200 metres. Later we take a short walk through the klints and grykes of the limestone pavement to witness the unique flora and fauna that grows in this special ecosystem.

We also explore the rich history and archaeology of the Burren with stops at the Neolithic Poulnabrone Dolmen, 12th century Corcomroe Abbey, the Celtic High Crosses of Kilfenora and 16th century Dunguaire Castle.

Tour Itinerary

9.30am
Following an introduction to Galway city we travel through Clarinbridge, famous for its annual Oyster Festival, and make our first stop at the little fishing village of Kinvara to view the 16th century Castle of Dun Guaire. Situated on a rocky promontory jutting into Galway Bay, this medieval tower house is thought to be one of the most photographed castles in Ireland.

11.00am
We enter the Burren through Corker pass by Abbey Hill which is named after the nearby Cistercian abbey of Corcomroe. Dating to the late 12th century Corcomroe Abbey has much decorative stone carving including the elaborate tomb effigy of King Conor O Brien of Thomond who died in battle in 1267. After a quick stop at Ballyalban fairy fort (home of the little people) we visit Poulnabrone Dolmen, the 5800 year old portal tomb which has become the ancient symbol of the Burren.

12.30pm
Stopping also to see the Celtic High Crosses of Kilfenora we make our way past Lisdoonvarna, famous for its matchmaking festival, and on to the coastal village of Doolin where we break for lunch at Gus O Connors pub. After lunch we visit the majestic Cliffs of Moher for a two hour stop, taking time to walk and enjoy the stunning views over the Atlantic Ocean and Aran Islands. There is also free admission to the award winning and state of the art interpretive centre.

 5.30pm
We return via the coast road past Ballynalakan Castle, Fanore beach and Black Head lighthouse. Along the way we make a short stop to walk upon the limestone pavement and view the waves crashing off the rocky cliffs of Ballyreen. After an eventful day we arrive back in Galway City.
