Tour Overview
This tour takes you on a journey through the wild and rugged landscape of Connemara with its vast boglands, dark lakes and scenic mountain ranges. Recognised as a unique ecosystem, the region comprises the jagged peaks of the Twelve Bens and Maamturk Mountains and the desolate beauty of the Inagh Valley.
We stop at the ancient village of Cong, location of the Quite Man Movie and Ashford Castle, former home of the Guinness family. We also explore the rich heritage of Connemara with stops at the fairytale Castle of Kylemore, where we break for lunch, and 14th century Ross Friary.
Along the way we discover natural wonders such as Killary Harbour, Irelands only natural Fjord, Lough Nafooey and Connemara National Park.
Tour Itinerary
Tour departs from Galway Coach Station on Fairgreen Road opposite the main City Tourist Office. We travel through Headford, gateway to the Corrib, and make our first stop to stroll through the gothic arches of 14th century Ross Friary, one of the best preserved monastic ruins in Ireland. Soon after we visit the ancient village of Cong, setting for John Fords 1950s Oscar winning film The Quite Man. Surrounded by a rich archaeological landscape and numerous underground cave systems, Cong is a mystical place which is also famous for its 7th century royal abbey and medieval Ashford Castle.
We travel into the wilderness of Connemara by the magical and hidden valley of Lough Nafooey, after which we drive along Killary Harbour, Irelands only natural Fjord, with its awe-inspiring and dramatic scenery. Our main stop is at the romantic and fairytale castle of Kylemore where we will break for lunch with views of Diamond Hill inside the Connemara National Park. Here you will have plenty of time to visit the Gothic Castle, Church and beautiful Victorian walled gardens.
We return by the beautiful Inagh Valley with its lakes, peat bogs and views of the Twelve Bens and Maamturk Mountains. Passing Maam Cross and Oughterard, angling centre of Lough Corrib, we arrive back in Galway City by the old university Quadrangle and Catholic Cathedral.
